Comines-Warneton et de la région

Where local history meets folklore
Founded in 1959 by a group of volunteers, the association Histoire et folklore de Comines (history and folklore of Comines) rapidly made a reputation. Renamed Société d’Histoire de Comines-Warneton et de la région (historical society of Comines-Warneton and the region) in 1976, it has since then diversified its initial objectives.
Where a mammoth tusk, a cannonball and many other objects retrace the past
The archaeology museum covers a wide range of themes and owns some precious discoveries from various excavation sites: mammoth tusks, Neolithic remains, Gallo-Roman and medieval artefacts, and iron harvest from the Great War.
Where family trees spread out their branches
The genealogy centre of the society brings together a wealth of administrative documents (births, marriages, deaths, etc.) and registers.
Where a gold mine of documents delights researchers
The documentation centre houses some 150,000 volumes, newspaper collections, photos, postcards as well as various archives. This wealth of information is complemented by some sixty backlit info panels providing a remarkable cartographic and iconographic overview of the region.
Where the Mémoires bring fragments of local history back to life
Since 1971, the association has been publishing collections of articles on local history, archaeology and dialectology
This annual volume of the Mémoires de la Société d’Histoire is the result of research by volunteer authors who are fond of regional history.
These memoirs are traditionally published on the annual conference during the Fête des Mountches (early December).
