Visit the Plugstreet 14-18 Experience Interpretation Centre

Perfectly integrated into its wooded surroundings and built close to Ploegsteert’s British Memorial to the Missing, Plugstreet 14-18 Experience Interpretation Centre has a wonderful resonance.

Its architecture inspired by Hill 63 – the hill at the foot of which it is located – features an elegant glass pyramid, whose half-underground structure is reminiscent of the Catacombs, a large underground complex dug in the side of Hill 63.

A quadrilingual interactive tour

  • A film of exceptional didactic interest explaining how the game of alliances fuelled Europe’s descent into World War I.
  • A presentation of the actions of Australian and New Zealand soldiers during the 3rd Battle of Ypres and the capture of the Messines-Wijtschate ridge.
  • Animations illustrating underground warfare and the explosion of mines in June 1917.

Touch screens and often previously unpublished pictures

A thematic hike showing the evolution of the front line in the Lys sector and the cohabitation of civilians and soldiers during the long months of war..
