All the folklore surrounding the Mountches
Is the spirit of the monks still alive?
An unwavering devotion to Saint Nicholas
Don’t forget that the monks of Warneton were dependent on the mother abbey of Arrouaise (France), dedicated to Saint Nicholas. No wonder the Mountches, Warnetonnois of all ages, are well-behaved children! This enthusiasm for Saint Nicholas reaches its peak in a picturesque night-time procession where decorated floats parade by torchlight.
Don’t hesitate to enjoy this unique experience!
The little Mountches, hooded in white, dance wildly. From atop his horse, the great saint throws some 300 oranges. The bonfire and the burning of a straw Mountche precede the traditional throwing of the Mountches, little dolls in the likeness of monks, of course!
The excitement is then at its peak!
