1914-1918 Remembrance

Last Post

Bugle, clarion or trumpet: the emotion of the Last Post

The Last Post is sounded at the Ploegsteert Memorial every first Friday of the month at 7 p.m. This ceremony honours the victims of the First World War in the presence of the local authorities, associations, celebrities and an ever-growing and regular audience. The Last Post, that all-important final call, resounds in an atmosphere of recollection. For the occasion, the nearby Plugstreet 14-18 Experience Interpretation Centre remains open until 7pm

Anzac Day Eve

ANZAC Memorial Day on 25th April

After the disaster at Gallipoli (spring 1915), the ANZAC (Australian and New Zealand Corps) was dispatched to the Western Front.
They suffered heavy losses during the 3rd Battle of Ypres.
April 25 is now a national day of commemoration. And it is celebrated in Comines-Warneton too.
On Anzac Day Eve (24th April), Australian and New Zealand delegations pay tribute to their compatriots who fell during the capture of Messines-Wijtschate in 1917 at Toronto Avenue Cemetery and Berks Cemetery Extension in Ploegsteert respectively.

« Christmas Truce » Plugstreet (Saint-Yvon)

A growing notoriety over the years

The 1914 Christmas Truce was first re-enacted by the Comité de la Bataille du Canal in 2007. This re-enactment gradually gained importance to include a bivouac, permanent trenches, a football match, public support and a peace candle ceremony … A great tribute to the incredible Christmas Truce that took place at Saint-Yvon! Wreaths, poppies, footballs, and other sentimental items are often placed at both sites.

From the Saint-Yvon Cross to the UEFA monument

1999: A few members of the Khaki Chums or Association for Military Remembrance recreate the conditions of the 1914 Christmas Truce. After a trying experience, they decide to erect the cross of The Khaki Chums Christmas Truce.

2014: The UEFA Christmas Truce Monument is unveiled by Michel Platini.

A shell case topped by a ball symbolises the truce initiated by sport and which sealed fraternity in the face of adversity.
