Bugle, clarion or trumpet: the emotion of the Last Post
The Last Post ceremony takes place at the Ploegsteert Memorial every first Friday of the month at 7 p.m. This ceremony honours the victims of the First World War in the presence of the local authorities, associations, celebrities and an ever-growing and regular audience. The Last Post, that all-important final call, resounds in an atmosphere of recollection.
From Taptoe to Last Post
In the 17th century, the Dutch marked the end of the day with the taptoe-signaal, signifying literally the closing of the beer barrel taps. British troops on military campaign in Holland took over this custom to organise their camp life, creating a bugle call that would become known as ‘the Last Post’. Today, the Last Post symbolises the final farewell to soldiers who died in war and is played at military funerals and commemorative tributes.
